October News
Finally, October...my favorite month! October is seen as a bridge between the vibrant life of summer and the introspective quiet of winter. It symbolizes balance, transformation, and letting go, as nature’s changing leaves mirror the release of what no longer serves us.
Across many spiritual cultures, October is also recognized as a month of transition, harvest, gratitude, and honoring ancestors, with many traditions marking it as a time when the veil between worlds thins. Some cultures honor ancestors by creating altars, or ofrendas, to celebrate the annual holiday known as Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) that falls on November 1st and 2nd this year. However, Día de los Muertos for pets falls on October 27th this year as pets are said to be the first souls to come home for a reunion ahead of the people who follow over the next several nights.
In between both of these celebrations we have a holiday known as Halloween, or All Hallows’ Eve, in the West on October 31st every year. This holiday’s origins date back to the Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in) as they celebrated their new year on November 1st. The Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred and ghosts of the dead could return to earth.
If you create an alter to celebrate the passing of loved ones (people, pets, or both), I would love to see your pictures! Please feel free to submit using link below with the title 'Celebration Pic'. Also let me know if you would like your pic(s) posted in next month's November news!

Add all the remaining ingredients, bring to a boil, and simmer partially covered for 30 minutes or until the potatoes and carrots are tender. Serve with your favorite bread or as a side dish. Store in refrigerator 5 to 7 days or in the freezer for up to 6 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge. It can be reheated in the microwave or on the stovetop over medium heat until warmed through.
